9 BEST NON-TOXIC SILVERWARE AND FLATWARE BRANDS FOR A SAFER TABLE
This blog post is all about the best non-toxic silverware and flatware brands!
More and more people are becoming aware that most cookware available to us is toxic and that cooking with it can expose us to harmful substances.
But rarely do we think about the potential toxicity of the cutlery we use on a daily basis.
Many forks, knives, and spoons are made with harmful materials that can leach chemicals into our food when we eat with them.
Fortunately, we can easily find safe options that we can trust for everyday use!
In this blog post, I’ve rounded up the 9 best non-toxic silverware and flatware brands that create quality, non-toxic cutlery.

Why should we buy non-toxic silverware and flatware?
While there are plenty of non-toxic options out there, many forks, spoons, and knives on the market are made with materials that can leach harmful substances into the food we eat.
For instance, many silverware brands make their cutlery from low-quality metals, which can contain lead or other heavy metals.
Those can leach into our food, especially when exposed to acidic substances or heat.
Prolonged exposure to heavy metals can lead to a variety of health issues and can affect multiple body systems.
Some flatware pieces are also coated or colored with toxic elements.
When the coating wears off over time, it can go into our food and we might ingest unwanted substances as well.
Another problematic material is plastic.
While most flatware brands make their cutlery from metals, plastic is commonly used in single-use or kids’ and baby cutlery.
We won’t go into much detail here, but plastic can be incredibly toxic.
Eating with it can leach harmful chemicals such as BPA and phthalates into our meals.
Those substances are known to cause a wide range of health issues, such as hormone disruption and adverse effects on different organs and the reproductive system.
Thankfully, there are many non-toxic silverware options made with safe materials!

What is the safest non-toxic silverware material?
Silverware has been historically made of silver, so you might be thinking: Is silver silverware toxic?
Well, depending on how it’s made it could be!
Cutlery made of 100% pure silver or sterling silver is considered safe and non-toxic.
However, I do not recommend buying silver-plated flatware as the plating can wear off over time and expose you to the metal that is underneath (which might be toxic).
I’ve not included silver silverware in this article because it’s incredibly expensive.
Instead, I’ve featured brands making flatware from one of the safest materials available: stainless steel.
There are many different grades of stainless steel, some of which are better than others.
Ideally, you want to buy silverware made of 18/10 stainless steel, which is the highest grade as it is very durable and rust- and corrosion-resistant.
If you have a nickel sensitivity, you may want to opt for 18/0 stainless steel instead.
I also recommend that you do not purchase from brands that do not disclose where their stainless steel products are produced.
We don’t know what exactly those pieces are made of and how they’re manufactured.
The best option is stainless steel made in the USA or Europe where manufacturing standards are the strictest.
What other things to look for when shopping for non-toxic silverware and flatware?
Besides choosing safe, non-toxic materials, opt for high-quality flatware that is made to last so that you can enjoy it for decades.
Also, make sure to choose dishwasher-safe flatware if you don’t intend on hand-washing it.
If you’re looking for colored forks, spoons, and knives, opt for ones made with a PVD color finish.
It is a non-toxic and eco-friendly alternative to traditional metal coating processes.
For a more sustainable choice, get silverware made using sustainable manufacturing processes.
For instance, some brands work with factories that run on renewable energy or ship their products using plastic-free packaging.
What’s more, you may want to support brands that produce their silverware using locally sourced materials and in countries with strict environmental and social standards.
Lastly, avoid buying vintage silverware unless you know for sure what it’s made of.
Many vintage pieces contain heavy metals like lead!
