If you live in a rainy climate, carrying an umbrella with you wherever you go is absolutely necessary.
And if you use one regularly, you’ve probably realized how poorly made most of them are!
The majority of umbrellas we can buy at the store do not last long and break very easily.
They are short-term, disposable products that we regularly throw away and repurchase all over again.
This has a massive environmental impact and contributes to the huge waste issue we are currently facing around the world!
Thankfully, some sustainable brands are slowly changing things for the better in the umbrella industry.
They aim to fight that throwaway culture with their durable, sustainable umbrellas.
This is exactly what Original Duckhead’s mission is about.
This blog post is sponsored by Original Duckhead. As always, I love and recommend all the brands I mention on this blog, and my views are genuine. Please read my Disclosure for more details.
What is Original Duckhead?
Original Duckhead is a female-owned, eco-friendly umbrella brand based in London, United Kingdom (but it ships its products worldwide).
It was founded in 2012 out of a core desire to encourage people to spend more time in nature, even when it’s rainy and gloomy outside.
Its mission is to help us get outdoors and reconnect with Mother Earth without sacrificing style or sustainability.
Original Duckhead’s umbrellas are the cutest and most adorable ones you will ever see!
What you will love about Original Duckhead’s sustainable umbrellas
What sets this brand apart from other companies is how unique its umbrellas are: their handle is in the shape of a duck head!
This fun detail will make you smile every time you see your umbrella, and you will stand out from the crowd for sure!
The brand’s umbrellas also come in a wide variety of colors and uplifting prints, including lovely flowers and stripes.
Most of them are inspired by nature, and we get to choose from many bright, bold colors.
Original Duckhead has even recently launched two models featuring a 70s-inspired psychedelic swirls print; perfect for dancing in the rain!
Not only are the umbrellas incredibly beautiful, but they are also handmade with sustainable materials.
The canopies are produced from recycled plastic (rPET), crafted from recycled post-consumer waste using 9 plastic bottles per umbrella.
So they help remove plastic waste from landfills and oceans!
They are waterproofed with an eco-friendly, non-toxic PFC-free AC coating.
Original Duckhead’s umbrellas also have a handle made from sustainably-harvested birch wood, as well as a strong aluminum and steel frame.
Original Duckhead makes all its umbrellas prioritizing longevity and high quality.
The brand gifted me an umbrella 6 months ago, and I’ve never had any issues with it!
We can easily see that the construction is durable and that they are built to last.
The frames are wind-resistant: they can withstand the strongest gales of wind and you can even use them in the heaviest thunderstorms!
Practicality & comfort
Original Duckhead’s umbrellas can be used year-round to protect you from the elements (rain or sun).
They come with a protective sleeve and are lightweight and compact, so you can carry them everywhere with you.
They also feature an automatic open button, making them very easy to open, and their handle is designed to be very comfortable to hold.
The brand works with a family-owned manufacturer in China, which is committed to ethical and sustainable practices.
The partner factories are SEDEX audited and SA8000 certified for health, labor, safety, and environmental standards.
Plus, Original Duckhead is also a Living Wage accredited company.
When I received Original Duckhead’s umbrella, I was pleasantly surprised by the packaging it came in.
It was shipped in a padded FSC-certified paper mailer that is completely recyclable, and the umbrella inside was carefully packaged in a 100% biodegradable polybag.
There were also a few labels (made of recycled paper and printed with soy ink) attached to the umbrella with a string.
As you can see, there is no non-biodegradable plastic whatsoever!
Most umbrellas usually need to be thrown away at the end of their lives.
However, Original Duckhead’s umbrellas are recyclable!
The brand offers you to send back your used umbrella, and it will recycle it for you (and you get 10% off your next order).
Original Duckhead’s products
Original Duckhead’s umbrellas are at the heart of its business model.
You get to choose from 24 beautiful models, all of which are backed by a two-year warranty.
I chose the Denim Moon model because I love its blue color and the meaning behind its print.
It is inspired by the rain, or “the elixir of life”, which is a vital source of fresh spring water on Earth.
The umbrellas will encourage you to get outside, embrace nature, and get the most out of what it has to offer.
These umbrellas are also a great gift you can give your loved ones at Christmas, Easter, or birthdays.
They always come in handy, so they will be used and cherished by everyone!
Original Duckhead also sells beautiful reusable bags made from the surplus materials from its umbrella canopies.
They are crafted from 6 recycled post-consumer plastic bottles!
Whether you’re going to the supermarket, the beach, or even the gym, these bags spaciously fit anything you might need.
They can hold up to 20kg, and their wide shoulder straps distribute weight comfortably.
The bags are also very practical as they are lightweight, water-resistant, and machine-washable, and they fold into a small pouch.
Original Duckhead has partnered with Self Care Co to offer you a vegan organic candle.
It is hand poured in small batches using natural soy wax and high-grade essential oils.
The lovely scent will make you feel like you are sinking into a hot bath after a long walk in the rain!
