For those of us who care about the environment, this is deeply concerning.

Since they’re made of plastic, buying those supports the oil industry, which is one of the most polluting industries in the world.

It also generates massive amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change. 

Disposable razors are also made to be thrown away after a few uses.

They quickly become blunt and leave us with no other choice than disposing of them (they’re not recyclable!) and repurchasing new ones every so often. 

This is very wasteful and adds to the problem of overflowing landfills around the world.

Some razors even find their way into nature and oceans, where they break down into tiny pieces of plastic that will get ingested by wildlife. 

Many disposable razors also come with built-in moisturizing strips supposed to soothe or hydrate our skin.

While those are convenient, they’re also typically made with toxic chemicals such as PEGs, SLS, BHT, propylene glycol, and synthetic fragrances. 

Many of those substances can cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, endocrine disruption, and other health issues.

Doing this saves us a lot of money in the long run!

What is the best eco-friendly razor? What to look for when shopping for sustainable, reusable razors? 

There are different types of reusable razors on the market: 

• Classic safety razors: Safety razors use double-edge steel blades and are typically 100% plastic-free. They can have a learning curve, but they are some of the best zero-waste options! This is what I use, and I wouldn’t go back to any other type of razor!
• Cartridge-style razors: These work like disposable razors but have a reusable handle with a detachable blade cartridge, which often features a lubricating strip. The downside is that the cartridges often contain plastic. 
• Hybrid razors: Reusable hybrid razors use standard safety razor blades but look and feel like disposable razors. They have a pivoting head, often with the possibility to use multiple blades at once for a closer shave. 
• Electric trimmers: While these run on electricity, they’re reusable, and we don’t have to purchase blade refills for them.

All four options have pros and cons and are better for the environment than disposable versions.

I recommend that you choose a razor that you feel comfortable using and that has as few plastic parts as possible.

If you can opt for a 100% plastic-free option, that’s even better!

Reusable, eco-friendly razors are often made from durable materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, bamboo, or recycled plastic.

Some great ones are even made from recycled glass! 

Consider also investing in quality.

You want your razor to last for many years, so it’s worth paying a little more upfront to get a long-lasting product and avoid frequent replacements. 

Another thing I recommend: try to buy non-toxic razors made without a hydrating strip or with one formulated with clean, natural ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, or shea butter. 

What’s more, check whether the brand you’re buying from offers a blade recycling program.

Some companies allow customers to send back their old blades, which is super cool! 

Bonus points for brands that use plastic-free, sustainable packaging and have implemented eco-friendly practices.
