Most candles nowadays are made from paraffin, which is produced from fossil fuels such as petroleum, oil shale, or coal.
The main issue is that when we burn paraffin wax candles, a variety of toxic chemicals are released into the air.
Those include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene.
Some of them are carcinogens, while others can cause a wide range of concerns such as headaches, eye and throat irritation, pulmonary edema, and even negative effects on the nervous and reproductive systems.
Not only that but most candles are also dyed and scented using a bunch of synthetic chemicals.
While some of these ingredients may be harmless, others can cause serious health issues.
For instance, formaldehyde may increase our cancer risk, and phthalates adversely impact the endocrine system and the functioning of many organs.
To make things worse, candles may also feature wicks with a lead core.
Burning such candles could potentially cause lead poisoning, especially in babies and children who are more at risk.
Thankfully, the production and sale of such candles were banned in 2003 in the US.
