Finding a good sports bra that we love wearing can be tricky.

It needs to fit perfectly, be supportive enough for our active lifestyle, and be comfortable to let us move freely. 

However, finding a non-toxic sports bra can be even more challenging! 

Most sports bras from popular brands contain harmful chemicals, like BPA and PFAS, which we particularly do not want anywhere near our breasts.

In this article, I’ve rounded up the 12 best non-toxic and organic sports bras so you can have a healthier workout.

Are sports bras safe? Why should we only wear non-toxic & organic sports bras? 

In the last few years, testing has shown that sports bras sold by many activewear brands contain high levels of BPA, an endocrine-disrupting chemical. 

Some of these brands are selling pieces that could expose individuals to up to 40 times the safe limit of BPA according to the standards set in California! 

BPA can be absorbed through the skin and end up in our blood, and then mimics or blocks hormones and leads to a variety of health issues.

For instance, exposure to BPA can cause developmental problems in children, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and early puberty in girls. 

But that’s not all!

Many conventional sports bras (mostly those made of synthetic fabric) also contain detectable levels of fluorine, which is an indicator of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”. 

Exposure to PFAS chemicals has been linked to a wide range of health problems, including different types of cancer, higher cholesterol levels, lower response in some vaccines, and more. 

Synthetic clothing can contain countless other chemicals that are harmful to our health!

Not to mention that those chemicals are more likely to be absorbed by our skin when we’re sweating. 

Nursing moms should be particularly careful about the materials their sports bras are made of.

But really, anyone should stay away from conventional models, and choose non-toxic and organic sports bras instead!

What is the best material for a non-toxic or organic sports bra?

If you can, stay away from synthetic fabrics and opt for natural options.

The healthiest materials you may want to look for are: 

• Organic cotton (look for the GOTS certification to ensure it’s truly organic): if you cannot find an organic cotton bra you like, cotton sports bras are still way better than their synthetic counterparts. 
• Tencel lyocell: this all-natural fabric is made from wood pulp and is one of the most sustainable fabrics you can get. 
• Wool: there are great options made of merino wool or alpaca wool! 
• Hemp: these are trickier to find, but worth mentioning here. 

Most brands offering natural fiber sports bras will often include a few percent spandex to make their bras stretchy.

Since it’s a very small portion of the garments, we shouldn’t be too concerned about that. 

But if you want something all-natural, I’ve found a few options made of 100% natural fabrics (check them out below!). 

If you prefer to get a synthetic sports bra, you can still find great non-toxic models (I’ve included some in this article), but you need to be careful about the fabric. 

Buy from brands that have disclosed that their products are free of harmful chemicals like PFAS or BPA. 

Ideally, choose sports bras that are certified by OEKO-TEX to ensure they’re completely free of harmful substances.
