Most conventional sneakers may look great on the outside, but the way they’re made often comes with a hidden cost, both for the environment and the people making them. 

Most sneakers are made from unsustainable materials, with plastic being the most common.

From the uppers to the soles, foam, and lining, many shoes rely on petroleum-based components, which come with several serious problems. 

Besides being very energy-intensive, oil extraction and production are among the most polluting industries in the world and major contributors to climate change.

On top of that, plastics are not biodegradable, meaning old sneakers can sit in landfills for decades, or even centuries, long after we’re done with them. 

Some synthetic sneakers can also shed tiny plastic fibers through wear and abrasion, contributing to microplastic pollution.

Not to mention that cheap, mass-produced plastic-based sneakers are often not built to last.

Fast fashion, in particular, encourages poor craftsmanship and ensures our shoes have a short lifespan.

This contributes to waste and overconsumption. 

With so many poorly-made plastic shoes around, leather alternatives might seem like a better option. 

However, while leather is often more durable than plastic, conventional leather production comes with its own environmental and ethical issues, and most brands don’t source it responsibly.

Wearing conventional sneakers can negatively impact our health as well.

Many shoes are treated with toxic chemicals such as plasticizers, flame retardants, and dyes.

A 2025 study even found PFAS chemicals, heavy metals, and phthalates in some shoes sold by fast fashion brands.

And that’s not all! 

Many sneakers are mass-produced in factories where workers are paid very low wages and face unsafe conditions.

Child labor has also been reported in some parts of the industry.

On the other hand, ethical and sustainable sneakers brands take a different approach.

They use eco-friendly materials, prioritize their workers’ well-being, and focus on producing shoes that are well-made, proving that style, comfort, and responsibility can go hand in hand.

What to look for when shopping for sustainable & ethical sneakers?

To make sure you’re buying truly eco-friendly sneakers, start by checking the materials they are made of.

Avoid those made from virgin plastics, such as polyester, nylon, petroleum-based foam, PVC-based faux leather, and synthetic rubber.  

Instead, prefer eco-conscious sneakers made from sustainable and/or natural materials, such as: 

• Recycled polyester
• Organic cotton
• Recycled cotton
• Hemp
• Cork 
• Natural or recycled rubber
• Plant-based leathers like apple leather, cactus leather, or Piñatex
• Other bio-based or plant-derived materials

If you want leather sneakers, try to get ones made from recycled or repurposed leather.

If that’s not possible, buy from a brand that sources its leather from tanneries rated Gold by the Leather Working Group.

Alternatively, opt for vegetable-tanned leather, which is much more sustainable than conventional leather.

Transparency and ethical practices are just as important as materials.

Support companies that are transparent about their supply chain, implement fair labor practices, and prioritize eco-friendly processes.

Look for brands with sustainable packaging and recognized third-party certifications like Fairtrade, B Corp, GOTS, Climate Neutral, or Butterfly Mark.

Some brands go even further and have a recycling program or offer sneakers that can be easily repaired. 

Finally, focus on quality over quantity.

Investing in one pair of durable sneakers made with quality craftsmanship is far more sustainable than buying multiple cheap pairs that will wear out quickly.
