The food we eat has a massive impact on our overall health and well-being.
If we want to live a healthy lifestyle, choosing healthy, quality ingredients is essential.

Those can also impact our health if we’re not careful about the materials they’re made of.
Many can leach harmful chemicals into our food, exposing us to unhealthy substances on a daily basis.
In this blog post, I’ve rounded up the 10 best non-toxic and wooden cooking utensils for a safe kitchen!
From wood spatulas and spoons to stainless steel tongs, silicone basting brushes, and whisks, you’ll find the safest utensils to cook with.

Why should we buy non-toxic & wooden cooking utensils?
Many kitchen utensils are made from plastic, usually nylon, or with a non-stick coating.
Those can leach harmful chemicals into our meals when we cook with them.
Black-colored plastic utensils in particular may contain alarming levels of banned toxic flame retardants, which are known endocrine disruptors.
They may also contain harmful heavy metals like lead and antimony, which we end up ingesting when we cook with those plastic utensils.
This can lead to neurological damage, developmental issues, and organ dysfunction, among other problems.
Plastic items may also contain toxic substances like phthalates, BPA, and other harmful chemicals.
Not to mention that plastic utensils wear out fast and end up in landfills at the end of their lives.
So they’re some of the most unsustainable kitchen tools you can get!
On the contrary, non-toxic and wooden cooking utensils are made from healthy materials that do not leach chemicals into our food.
They’re heat-resistant and completely safe to cook with.
Plus, they’re a lot more durable and can withstand daily use for years!

What is the safest material for cooking utensils?
Some of the safest materials for cooking utensils are wood, stainless steel, and high-quality silicone.
Wood is by far my favorite option as it is made with natural, biodegradable materials.
It’s also gentle on all cooking surfaces and it looks great!
Just check that the wood is either unfinished or treated with a food-safe finish like coconut oil or beeswax.
Stainless steel is another non-toxic option though it can scratch up your pots and pans if you’re not careful when using it.
Silicone can also be great, but make sure that it’s 100% silicone and that it doesn’t contain any plastic or plasticizers.
Your best bet is to opt for food-grade, or even better, platinum silicone.
You always want to invest in quality when buying silicone products to ensure they’re not hiding any harmful substances.
Of course, always avoid plastic utensils and those with a non-stick coating.
You also want to be wary of those made with melamine-formaldehyde resin, as well as bamboo cooking utensils as they may be made with formaldehyde glue.
What other things should we look for when shopping for non-toxic & wooden cooking utensils?
The materials they’re made of are the number one thing you should be checking if you want to buy non-toxic cooking utensils.
If you’re choosing wooden spoons or spatulas and want to make a more sustainable choice, see if you can get wood certified by FSC to ensure it comes from responsibly managed forests.
No matter which non-toxic material you opt for, another thing you may want to consider is whether the utensil is ethically and sustainably made.
Is it produced using sustainable methods?
Are the workers paid fairly and treated well?
How transparent is the brand you’re buying from?
If you can find utensils made locally or by artisans, that’s even better!
These should be of better quality and made with higher ethical standards.
Also, try to buy quality products that are built to last.
Before using them, don’t forget to check how you should be cleaning and using the item.
