Prepare delicious meals without all the chemicals thanks to the best non-toxic and wood cutting boards!

If you’re like me and are trying to minimize the chemicals in your kitchen, the first thing you are probably tempted to swap is your cookware.

However, you shouldn’t just stop there.

Many other things in our kitchens contain harmful chemicals that we don’t want near our food.

For instance, most cutting boards are problematic, even many of those made of natural materials like wood.

In this blog post, I share the 8 best non-toxic and wood cutting boards that cut out harmful chemicals.

I’ve included models made with some of the safest cutting board materials as well as non-toxic wood cutting boards.

Why should we buy non-toxic and wood cutting boards?

Many cutting boards on the market are made of plastic, whether that is polypropylene, acrylic, or polyethylene.

While some of them (polyethylene models) are better than others, cutting on plastic boards may scratch the surface and release small plastic particles.

The plastic they’re made of may also leach toxic additives into our food.

Plastic boards contain a variety of harmful chemicals that can negatively impact our health.

Even those labeled as BPA-free can be full of toxic substances, so we’re better off avoiding all plastic cutting boards.

Wood cutting boards are a much healthier and safer alternative to plastic models.

However, not all of them are created equal!

Most wooden boards (including bamboo ones) are made with different pieces of wood glued together.

The issue is that the glue may contain unwanted chemicals such as formaldehyde, BPA, phthalates, and plasticizers.

They may also be finished with chemical treatments and coatings, which are often not disclosed on the company’s website.

Thankfully, we can find non-toxic wood cutting boards (more on that in the next section)!

Several other materials are safe and healthy to use, so I made sure to include them on this list.

In this article, I share the best non-toxic & wood cutting boards!

What is the best non-toxic cutting board material?

One of the safest materials for cutting boards is wood made without glues and chemical treatments.

The easiest way to ensure there is no glue is to buy a board made with a single piece of wood and that does not require adhesives to glue separate pieces together.

If you cannot find them or don’t like the ones that are available to you, at least see if you can buy cutting boards made with formaldehyde-free glues or adhesives.

Another important criterion to take into account is choosing a cutting board that isn’t treated with chemicals to protect the wood surface.

Avoid all those finished with resin lacquers or any types of synthetic, chemical-based oils.

Your best option here is to pick a board finished with natural waxes and oils, such as beeswax or linseed oil.

Even mineral oil is better than resin lacquers!

Wood is very durable and is naturally antimicrobial.

However, it requires maintenance and is rarely dishwasher-safe.

So if you’re looking for a safe material that is not wood, don’t worry!

You can buy non-toxic cutting boards made with either stainless steel or tempered glass.

These options are super easy to clean and less likely to harbor bacteria, though they might be a bit harder on your knives.

Each option has its pros and cons, so it’s up to you to decide what you prefer!

What other things should we look for when shopping for non-toxic and wood cutting boards?

As someone trying to live sustainably every day, I always like choosing products made with the environment in mind.

If you too want to make more eco-friendly choices and are looking for sustainable wood cutting boards, look for the FSC certification.

It guarantees that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests

I’ve also seen great boards made from reclaimed wood, which is the most sustainable option you can get!

You may also want to buy from brands that prioritize durability and their workers’ well-being and use sustainable manufacturing processes.

If they carry third-party certifications such as Fair Trade or B Corp, that’s even better!
