Have a good night’s sleep with these non-toxic, organic comforters, duvet inserts, and duvet covers!

Nowadays, the bedding industry is flooded with comforters and duvets made with polyester filling.

Those are not the best options if we want to have a good night’s sleep.

Synthetic comforters aren’t breathable and tend to trap heat.

It makes them uncomfortable to sleep under, especially during the summer.

Not only that but they’re also often not made to last and are very unsustainable.

They’re also usually made with toxic chemicals that we’d better stay away from!

In this blog post, you’ll find 12 sustainable brands selling non-toxic, organic comforters, duvet inserts, quilts, and duvet covers.

Thanks to them, you’ll be able to have a healthier bedroom to sleep in at night!

What is the difference between a duvet and a comforter?

A duvet, or duvet insert, is a fluffy quilt stuffed with some kind of filling, usually down or polyester.

It’s thick and warm (with different weight options) and made to be used with a duvet cover as it’s usually too big to be washed in a washing machine.

On the other hand, a comforter is a thinner, less plush quilt-like bed cover that we usually use with a top sheet and extra quilts on top.

Sometimes, brands use these two words interchangeably.

So it’s important to keep that in mind while shopping for non-toxic, organic comforters and duvet inserts.

Why should you only buy non-toxic, organic comforters & duvet inserts?

Most comforters, quilts, and duvets we can find either online or at the store are made with conventional cotton and/or synthetic materials.

Many issues come with that.

First of all, bedding made from conventional cotton is unsustainable and potentially unhealthy to sleep in.

Cotton is widely sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, which adversely impact the ecosystems.

They pollute the soil and air, as well as both surface and groundwater.

Cotton production poses significant risks to the environment, fauna, and flora.

Not to mention the health of the farmers working with those pesticides!

In this post, you'll find the best non-toxic, organic comforters, duvet inserts, quilts, & duvet covers for a sustainable bedroom.

Comforters and duvets made from synthetic materials aren’t any better.

I’d say they’re even worse!

As they’re derived from petroleum, buying them supports the oil industry, a huge contributor to climate change and pollution.

Synthetic comforters and duvets also release microplastics when they’re washed, which then end up in waterways and ultimately, in the food chain.

What’s more, they’re also made and treated with toxic chemicals such as dyes and finishes.

Another reason to avoid synthetic sleep products is simply that they’re often very poorly made and don’t last.

Plus, synthetic duvets often have their filling clump or shift after washing.

On the contrary, non-toxic, organic comforters and duvet inserts aren’t made with synthetic materials and toxic substances, whether these are pesticides or chemical treatments.

It means that they’re both healthy to sleep in and sustainable.

What to look for when shopping for non-toxic, organic comforters, quilts, duvet inserts, & duvet covers?

Whether you’re looking for a comforter, duvet insert, quilt, or duvet cover, only choose options made from natural materials.

Ideally, opt for organic ones such as organic cotton, organic wool, or organic linen.

To ensure they’re truly organic, check that they’re certified by GOTS.

Organic comforters may also contain other natural materials such as hemp, Tencel, linen, down, silk, or wool.

If you opt for a product with down or wool filling, make sure it carries the Responsible Down Standard or the Responsible Wool Standard certifications.

If you prefer a vegan alternative, recycled polyester is a sustainable option to consider.

The product should also be dyed with non-toxic dyes and produced using sustainable practices in ethical factories that provide workers with fair working conditions.

See if you can also get your hands on an OEKO-TEX or MADE SAFE certified comforter.

These certifications guarantee that it doesn’t contain any harmful substances.

Other sustainable certifications you may want to look for are Fair Trade, Climate Neutral, and GreenGuard Gold.

Finally, stay away from products that are “stain-resistant” or “wrinkle-free”, because those are probably treated with toxic chemicals.
