Mixing bowls are a must-have item we can use for all sorts of cooking and baking tasks.

Very versatile, these kitchen essentials are great for mixing ingredients, proofing bread, and whipping cream or batter.

They’re also perfect for tossing salads with dressings and can double as serving bowls or even food storage containers when they come with lids.

Unfortunately, many mixing bowls are made of plastic or other materials that may be harmful to our health.

If you’re trying to reduce your exposure to toxic substances, you might want to switch to healthier options.

In this blog post, I’ve rounded up the 8 best non-toxic mixing bowls I could find so that you can mix, stir, and whip safely!

Why should we only use non-toxic mixing bowls?

While switching to non-toxic mixing bowls might not be the first thing that comes to your mind if you want to make your kitchen healthier, it’s a great step toward eliminating toxins from your home!

A large number of mixing bowls are made from harmful materials, one of them being plastic.

We all know that plastic isn’t good for the environment, but did you know it can also expose you to toxic substances?

For instance, plastic mixing bowls may contain bisphenols such as BPA or BPS, which are hormone disruptors.

Those can also negatively impact reproduction, depress the immune system, affect brain development, and cause many other health issues.

Given this, you might be tempted to get a mixing bowl advertised as “BPA-free”.

However, those can contain other types of bisphenol as well as many other harmful chemicals.

The best non-toxic mixing bowls are made of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel.

Phthalates are another problematic substance commonly found in plastic products.

Exposure to phthalates can negatively influence the functioning of multiple organs and the endocrine and reproductive systems.

Some plastic mixing bowls are made of melamine, which is also very unhealthy to use.

Melamine is suspected to be a carcinogen and an endocrine disruptor and is associated with reproductive and neurological impacts and kidney disorders.

All those harmful chemicals can end up leaching into our food, especially when the mixing bowl is heated, contains acidic foods, or becomes damaged over time.

Plastic mixing bowls aren’t the only bowls we should stay away from.

Some metal ones are made with poor-quality materials and may contain heavy metals such as lead and cadmium.

Heavy metals can accumulate in the body and cause damage to many organs, respiratory disorders, neurological effects, and even cancer.

For those reasons, we should all swap our unhealthy mixing bowls for safer options!

What are the best materials for a non-toxic mixing bowl?

If you want to get a healthy, non-toxic mixing bowl for your kitchen, stay away from those made of plastic, melamine, and low-quality metals.

Instead, get one made from one of the following safe materials:

  • Ceramic or porcelain: just check that it’s free of heavy metals like cadmium or lead
  • Glass
  • Stainless steel (unless you have nickel sensitivities)

You can also find great non-toxic silicone mixing bowls.

However, I recommend that you only get models made from food-safe, medical-grade, or platinum silicone.

Other types of “silicone” may contain plastic fillers and can leach toxic substances into your food.

Wood mixing bowls can also be a healthy option if they’re made from a single piece of wood (that way you know they’re not made with toxic glues).

Also, check that the wood is treated with all-natural, food-safe oils.
