This blog post is all about the best sustainable linen dresses for women!

With warm weather just around the corner, you might be on the lookout for dresses that will take you from spring to summer to fall.

Linen is one of the best fabrics for warm-weather clothing as it’s very breathable and will keep you comfy all day.

Not only that but this material is also one of the most sustainable out there, so it’s a great choice if you want to support sustainable fashion!

However, even though linen is eco-friendly, fast fashion brands are sometimes using this fabric to trick us into thinking their products are good for the environment.

When in reality, their pieces are just mass-produced and unethically made.

In this article, I’ve rounded up the 9 best sustainable linen dresses for breezy style.

I tried to include as many size-inclusive brands as possible as well as different affordable options for those of us who are on a budget.

The best sustainable linen dresses are made using eco-friendly practices and without pesticides.

Why buy sustainable linen dresses?

Contrary to dresses made from synthetic fabrics like polyester, dresses made from natural materials are breathable and don’t trap moisture, making them great for summer.

Linen is one of the best options for breathable, lightweight clothing!

This natural fabric allows the air to circulate through it, helping you stay cool and comfortable, even in warm weather.

It also naturally absorbs moisture and feels breezy on the skin.

Not only that but linen is actually one of the most sustainable fabrics out there!

The entire flax plant, from which linen is made, is used to create different products such as linseed oil or linen fabric, meaning that no part is wasted.

We can grow flax using very little water, compared to fabrics like cotton, and without using a lot of pesticides.

Linen is also a natural fabric so it’s biodegradable and it’s durable, meaning that we can use it for a very long time.

Now, even though linen is one of the best fabrics to buy in terms of sustainability, not all linen dresses are created equal.

Many are made by fast fashion brands that often implement unsustainable and unethical practices.

For instance, conventional linen sold by those companies is often grown with fertilizers like nitrates, which, in excess, can enter our waterways and damage our ecosystems.

Pesticide use is also common, even though it can be easily avoided.

Not only that but conventional linen is often produced using toxic chemicals like oxalic acid or alkali and can be bleached or dyed using synthetic dyes that are harmful to humans and ecosystems.

Lastly, fast fashion brands selling linen dresses still massively use sweatshops to make their garments, meaning that their workers are underpaid and work in unethical, unsafe conditions.

Thankfully, we can avoid those issues by buying sustainable linen dresses from ethical brands!

Read on to check some of them out!

Organic or European Flax certified pieces are some of the best sustainable linen dresses.

What to look for when shopping for sustainable linen dresses?

If you want to buy a sustainable linen dress, ideally purchase one made from organic linen.

That way, you know that the flax plant was grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers!

To ensure it’s organic, look for the GOTS certification.

Another certification I recommend is the OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

This one guarantees that the garment doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals and is 100% safe to wear.

If you cannot find or afford organic linen, that’s okay!

You can still find great sustainable options.

European Flax™ (recently renamed FLAX FIBER™) certified linen, whose plant is grown in France, Belgium, or the Netherlands, is one of the most eco-friendly linens you can get!

This certification ensures the fabric is fully traceable, made using sustainable methods, and produced following high labor standards.

What’s more, some brands use recycled linen in their dresses, which is another great option.

Try to buy from transparent brands that use non-toxic dyes and that have implemented eco-friendly practices throughout their supply chain.

For instance, some of the brands below work with Fair Trade-certified factories, support environmental nonprofits, or carry certifications like B Corp or Climate-Neutral.

You also want to buy from brands that prioritize ethical manufacturing, ensuring their workers are paid fairly and treated humanely at their workplace.
