What are sustainable spring essentials?
Spring essentials are items you use in your everyday life that bring you value as the weather gets warmer and sunnier.
They help you enjoy your time spent outside in nature or inside as you refresh your space, and make it as comfortable as possible.
However, know that you don’t have to spend money and buy anything if you don’t want to or find you don’t need them.
Also, if you already own some of these items, don’t feel pushed to buy new ones.
You can also borrow them or get them second-hand, for instance at a thrift store.
But if you’re looking for a new item, I make some suggestions to give you ideas and help you make more eco-friendly purchases.
As with all things I share on this blog, I only include ethical, sustainable products sold by brands I truly believe in.
The sustainable spring essentials you will find in this blog post are also made to last, so you will be able to use and enjoy them for years to come!
8 sustainable spring essentials to make the most out of the springtime
1. A denim jacket
A denim jacket is one of my favorite pieces in my spring wardrobe!
Where I live, we get many warm and sunny days during the springtime.
Yet, we often need to wear light jackets and cardigans because we still get some chilly weather, especially in the evenings.
What I love about denim jackets is that they are some of the most versatile wardrobe staples we can have in our closets.
They go with everything and are very easy to style and combine with other clothes and accessories!
We can also dress them up or down, depending on the situation.
Plus, we can wear them all year round as a layering piece in the colder months and as a lightweight jacket when it’s warmer.
If you’re on the lookout for a new jeans jacket this spring, try to stay away from fast fashion, and instead, support sustainable denim brands.
Outerknown has a gorgeous model, made from a blend of organic cotton and Tencel.
It is washed down to give it a well-worn feel, which I really like!
The jacket is crafted in a Fair Trade Certified factory, so it is both ethically and sustainably made.

2. A spring dress
On warmer days, I love pairing my denim jacket with a nice spring dress!
It’s flowy and lightweight and perfect if I’m after a more feminine look.
I always choose midi dresses and usually go for a neutral, solid color to make it simpler.
However, I also sometimes like to switch things up and go for a floral pattern.
What better time of the year than to wear floral prints when all the flowers outside are blooming?!
Pact sells some of the best sustainable spring dresses!
It has various models that look very flattering and are made with eco-friendly materials.
My favorite is its fit & flare tie-back organic cotton dress featuring lovely flowers.

3. Comfy sneakers
When the weather warms up after a long, cold winter, most of us start to spend a lot more time outside.
We may go on walks around the neighborhood, organize weekend trips, or even choose to travel and visit places.
As we get more active, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes to take care of our feet and show them some love.
This spring, swap your chunky boots for a pair of comfortable sneakers from Cariuma!
The brand’s canvas sneakers feature a cool classic look and you can choose from many colors.
They are designed with comfort and sustainability in mind, and handmade using eco-friendly materials like sustainably sourced natural rubber, cork, organic cotton, and recycled plastic.
Since the canvas and soles are made from natural materials, the sneakers are very breathable, which is ideal for those warmer days.
Not to mention that they are sent in recycled packaging and shipping is carbon-neutral!
I have an entire blog post about the best sustainable shoe brands if you can’t find what you’re looking for on Cariuma’s website, so check it out!
4. Non-toxic cleaning products
When spring rolls around, most of us get into the mood for spring cleaning.
We want to refresh our homes and make them sparkling clean.
However, if you want to stay away from toxic chemicals, make sure to stop buying conventional cleaning products.
These are filled with endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, allergens, and many other harmful substances!
Instead, choose to clean your home with simple, natural ingredients like baking soda or white vinegar.
I have an entire blog post about my sustainable cleaning routine with my all-time favorite ingredients I use, so check it out if you need some ideas.
If you prefer ready-made products, I highly recommend Dr. Bronner’s multipurpose cleaner, which is 100% natural and non-toxic.

5. Picnic essentials
My boyfriend and I got into the habit of organizing picnics every weekend in the spring and summer.
We absolutely love it!
However, while it might be tempting to bring single-use items with us, we always bring our reusables to reduce waste and be as sustainable as possible.
If you too want to organize a zero-waste picnic this spring, remember to bring these practical essentials with you to reduce your waste:
- Stainless steel water bottles and camping mugs for drinks
- Different lunch boxes, reusable silicone bags, and beeswax wraps to store your food and snacks
- Several cutlery sets and washable napkins
- A picnic blanket
- A basket to store and carry all your essentials
6. Sunglasses
Springtime also means that the sun is shining a lot more during the day.
So to protect our eyes from harmful sun rays, we should remember to bring our sunglasses with us whenever we plan on spending time outside.
If you already have a pair, do not forget to use it this season.
But if you don’t and want to find a more sustainable model, you can find many options on Outerknown’s website.
All these sunglasses are made from raw materials derived from cotton seeds and wood pulp.
So their frames are 100% biodegradable and you can even send them back for recycling at the end of their lives.
The sunglasses also feature polarized, mineral-glass lenses that are highly scratch-resistant.
They will protect your eyes from UVA, UVB, and HEV light!
7. A basket bag
In the spring and summer, I love carrying all my things in a nice basket bag!
These are perfect for going to the beach, but also to go to the farmers’ market or on little adventures and have all our essentials with us.
Not only are basket bags very practical and convenient to have, but they are also great fashion accessories.
They look really good and go with everything!
You can find a wide variety of Fair Trade Certified basket bags on Made Trade’s website.
These are very stylish and are handwoven using sustainable, natural materials like palm leaves, raffia, jute, or sisal.
Plus, Made Trade is a Climate-Neutral certified brand you can feel good about supporting!
These will become your go-to bags this spring!
8. Organic seeds
If you’re striving to help the environment, why don’t you start a garden this spring?
It’s an easy step you can take to live more sustainably and become a bit more self-sufficient.
Growing your own food, even if you only have a windowsill to grow herbs, will save you a lot of money in the long run.
You will also find that gardening is an incredibly rewarding activity, and your food will taste so much better!
So as soon as the weather gets warmer, consider getting some organic vegetable and herb seeds.
Research when it’s the best time to plant them and get to planting!
I don’t have a garden as I live in an apartment in the city, but I have two balconies.
When I moved in here, I decided to make the most out of the situation and bought several strawberry trees, lavenders, and mint.
I also intend to plant some tomato seeds and continue growing my herb collection very soon.
