Add texture and style to your home while taking care of your health with these 8 non-toxic rugs!

Rugs are incredibly helpful to make our homes cozier and more comfortable.

They’re also a great way to add a decorative touch without collecting a bunch of knick-knacks that take up space.

Not to mention they’re a must if we want to protect our floors.

Unfortunately, most rugs are made with synthetic materials and treated with toxic chemicals.

They’re far from ideal if we want to have a healthy, non-toxic home!

But thankfully, some sustainable brands are making things differently.

They utilize natural materials, stay away from harmful substances, and prioritize sustainability.

In this article, I’ve rounded up 8 brands selling non-toxic rugs so you can create a warm, inviting look in your home while staying safe and healthy.

Why should we only buy non-toxic rugs?

Conventional rugs and carpets are usually made from synthetic materials and contain harmful substances such as toxic dyes and flame retardants.

They also often emit VOCs (or volatile organic compounds), which we want to avoid to reduce indoor air pollution.

Not only that but many rugs are also treated with toxic stain-repelling and waterproofing treatments.

All those chemicals we can find in rugs can cause a variety of health issues, including respiratory symptoms, eye irritation, and hormone disruption to name a few.

Now, you may be wondering: is there such a thing as a non-toxic rug?

Thankfully, not all rugs are toxic and bad for our health.

Many options are made with natural materials and without toxic chemicals.

Try to opt for these when you can!

What to look for when shopping for non-toxic rugs? What type of rug is non-toxic?

Non-toxic rugs are made from natural materials such as wool (ideally, choose Responsible Wool Standard-certified wool), cotton (preferably GOTS-certified organic), jute, seagrass, sisal, or hemp.

If you intend to pair your rug with a rug pad to keep it in place, choose one made from wool or felt with a natural rubber backing if you can.

Check that the rug you want to buy is either undyed or colored with eco-friendly, non-toxic dyes.

It should also not contain any harmful chemicals such as PFAS, flame retardants, formaldehyde, and VOCs.

Remember to avoid rugs that have a stain-repelling or waterproofing treatment.

To ensure the rug is completely free of harmful substances, prefer rugs that carry the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.

Even better if they’re also made sustainably and certified Fairtrade!

The brand should also craft them in an ethical environment and be transparent about how and where its rugs are made.
