Shower curtains are a true breeding ground for bacteria.

Did you know that they harbor 60 times more bacteria than your toilet seat?

It means that we should wash them regularly and replace them when they start to look dingy and moldy.

However, buying those plastic shower curtains and liners every year can be very unsustainable and wasteful

Not only that but plastic shower curtains are usually made of PVC, which is unhealthy to use in our homes.

If you’re looking for a healthy, sustainable alternative to shower curtains, you’re in the right place!

In this article, you’ll find 8 eco-friendly, non-toxic shower curtains and liners so you can have a greener, safer bathroom.

Are plastic shower curtains toxic?

Most shower curtains available on the market are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Widely used all around our homes, PVC actually contains a variety of toxic chemicals we should try and stay away from.

When we have a PVC shower curtain in our bathroom, it releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Those may negatively impact the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver.

They’re also known to cause respiratory irritation, headaches, allergies, nausea, and more.

PVC shower curtains also contain phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, may be carcinogenic, and are detrimental to the neurological, reproductive, and developmental systems.

PVC is made with plenty of other chemicals that may cause all kinds of health effects.

What’s more, PVC shower curtains are very unsustainable and aren’t recyclable at the end of their lives.

But thankfully, there are eco-friendly, non-toxic shower curtains and liners on the market!

These eco-friendly, non-toxic shower curtains & liners are the best sustainable alternatives to those unhealthy plastic models.

Is PEVA non-toxic?

Since PVC is so unhealthy, many brands have started to sell PVC-free shower curtains and liners.

Some of the most commonly found are made of polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA, which is sometimes abbreviated EVA).

PEVA is often seen as a healthy option because it doesn’t contain chlorine, which creates toxic byproducts.

However, studies have shown that PEVA releases many other VOCs and is not a safe alternative to PVC.

So it appears to be better than PVC but still isn’t non-toxic and healthy to have in our homes.

Is there a non-toxic shower curtain? What is a natural alternative to shower curtains?

The best eco-friendly, non-toxic shower curtains and liners are made of natural fabrics, such as hemp, linen, and cotton (preferably organic).

Both hemp and linen have antibacterial properties and are machine-washable and very durable.

They’re not waterproof but they dry fast, so they’re great fabric options for shower curtains.

Shower curtains made of conventional cotton are also way better than plastic ones.

Unfortunately, they can contain toxic pesticide residue, so try to opt for organic cotton if possible.

One downside is that cotton shower curtains (including organic ones) aren’t resistant to mold and dry more slowly.

You will need to clean and wash them more regularly to keep them in good condition.

If you’re looking for a non-toxic shower curtain liner that is water-resistant, nylon and polyester are better than PVC.

Of course, these fabrics aren’t sustainable and may contain toxic substances as they are plastic.

But at least, like PEVA, they’re durable and not as toxic as PVC.

What to look for when shopping for eco-friendly, non-toxic shower curtains & liners?

Besides picking eco-friendly, natural materials, choose shower curtains and liners dyed with non-toxic dyes and made using sustainable manufacturing practices.

Support brands that are transparent and prioritize ethical business practices.

A great way to know if you are buying from a sustainable and non-toxic brand is to check if it has received third-party certifications.

Some of the best are GOTS, Fair Trade, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, MADE SAFE, or B Corp.
