10 minimalist hacks to live a simple life

1 – Stop comparing yourself to others

A lot of people try to keep up with the Joneses, they always want to have the latest gadgets.

However, it is okay if you don’t have the newest version of a given item. If your friends have certain belongings, it does not mean you need to get them as well.

Just appreciate what you have, otherwise, you will never feel truly satisfied. You will always want to buy new things to impress others.

The thing is, nobody cares about what each of us is doing. There is a quote that I love that I wanted to share with you.

Dave Ramsey once said, “We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like”.

I think it cannot be more true! Be different. Don’t think about what other people will think of you.

It’s okay if your phone is outdated or if you don’t wear brand names on your shirt.

Break this habit of comparing yourself to others and start living your best life!

2 – Declutter duplicate items

This one is one of the easiest ways to start downsizing your belongings. You probably don’t need three cutting boards or five belts.

The best way to go is to just keep the best quality item or your favorite one.

You are probably always reaching for your favorite items anyway so there is no need to have “just-in-case” duplicates.

Choose what works best for you and you will see that you won’t miss the others when they’re out of your life. You won’t even be thinking about them anymore.

Getting rid of duplicate items is such a good space-saver and one of my favorite decluttering hacks!

3 – One in, one out

Another minimalist hack is that, if you buy a new item, you need to declutter another one from your house.

For instance, if you want to buy a new t-shirt, you should get rid of an old t-shirt that you already own.

This way, you are making sure that you are not over-accumulating things. This tip will help you keep your home clutter-free.

It is also a great way to know that you are not adding duplicates to your belongings. And it makes you think thoroughly about your new purchase.

If you know to need to let go of something else, maybe you will realize that you like what you already have better. You will maybe realize the new item is not worth spending money on.

Some people even implement a “one in, two out” rule. The best thing is to do whatever will help you the most.

Minimalism should be something practical and that adds value to your life, not the opposite.

4 – Digitize and go paperless

Nowadays, we have the chance to be able to scan almost anything.

It means you don’t need to save all of those paper files and documents.

There are some administrative documents that we should keep.

However, if we just scanned and got rid of other papers, we would get a lot of space back in our drawers and cupboards!

You can also scan photographs, bills, mail, magazine pages, recipes you like in your recipe books.

For your electricity, water, Internet, or phone bills, ask companies if they can send them by email instead of a paper format. When you buy something new, ask for an email invoice.

That’s a great way to embrace digital minimalism in your life!

I also suggest that you choose online streaming services instead of buying physical DVDs and CDs.

Reading with an e-reader will also save you a ton of space instead of hoarding voluminous books in your apartment.

5 – Find different functions for things

One of the best ways to practice minimalism in your life is to have multipurpose items.

We don’t always need specialized objects for special uses. Some things can serve different purposes which will save you a lot of space in your apartment.

For instance, I own a hand blender which I can use for three different purposes.

It can turn into a basic blender, a mixer and it has a special attachment to make mashed potatoes. It saves me precious kitchen cupboard space!

Another example is to have a smart black dress that you can wear for multiple occasions, that you can dress up or dress down.

One item can replace multiple belongings which will simplify your life!

6 – Wait before making a purchase

Make it a rule for yourself to wait for at least three days before you purchase a new item.

This is one of the best ways to stop impulse buying! Of course, this does not apply to food and other consumables that you need to live.

Stores have great marketing strategies to make you spend money. They want you to buy more and more so that they can make more money.

If you wait several days before purchasing anything and you still want the item, then you will know that you truly want it.

This way, you will avoid making impulse purchases which will be better for your wallet.

7 – Multipurpose cleaning products

You don’t need a specialized cleaning item for each room and each surface of your home. Cleaning supplies can add up in our cupboards, and they take up a lot of space.

If you want to minimize your space, you could just have one or two multipurpose cleaners that you can use everywhere.

There are a lot of DIY recipes online, so you can choose the one that works best for you.

I personally only need white vinegar and baking soda to clean my whole apartment. I don’t need anything else, and they work great.

You can also check my DIY recipe to make your own natural laundry detergent.

I only use natural cleaning agents, so I know they are safe for my health and that they are harmless to the environment.

I even think that they work better than conventional chemical cleaners.

Using multipurpose cleaning products is one of the best minimalist hacks to live a simple life.

8 – Avoid buying things that require you to buy something else

Some companies make sure that when you purchase an item, you have to buy an additional one. If you don’t, you won’t be able to use the first one.

For instance, the newest version of the iPhone requires to have special headphones. So, people need to buy both if they want to be able to listen to music.

This concept also applies if you intend to buy a piece of clothing. You may realize you also need a pair of shoes to go with the outfit because you don’t have anything else matching in your closet.

Try to avoid those traps, it’ll help you live more minimally!

9 – Use quality reusable items

This one is maybe one of the less obvious minimalist hacks, but I think we should all implement it.

By having one good quality reusable item, you won’t need to store several of the disposable version. It saves you money and is so much better for the environment.

Also, having a reusable item will save you time because you won’t have to go back to the store to buy that thing again.

For instance, if you have a reusable straw, you won’t need to buy a pack of 100 straws again. And your home will look a lot less cluttered.

It may cost a bit more at first, but in the long run, it will be worth the initial investment.

10 – Limit your range of clothing

When you own neutral and multipurpose pieces, you can mix and match them very easily.

It doesn’t take so much time to get ready in the morning anymore.

You know that they all work very well together, each piece matches with everything else. This way, your wardrobe becomes very functional.

It is also great to have similar fabrics and colors to make sure you can wash everything together. It simplifies your laundry routine a lot.

Having pieces that require special care will give you more work and you will spend more time taking care of them.

Find the color scheme that suits you best and that you feel good wearing.

And declutter the rest of your clothes that do not spark joy.

You won’t waste time on choosing which colors you should get next time you’re on the market for a new piece of clothing.

It will also save you money since you won’t be buying things you will not end up wearing.

I hope you enjoyed these 10 minimalist hacks to live a simple life that I just shared with you!

  1. I really like the idea of going paperless, but I need a scanner, not just the one on my device to do so, as well as an understanding of how to organize all of the papers I have in a way that will make my documents easily accessible. In other words, a plan for doing so. I am pinning this because I live in a small space and need to clear up storage space for things I do need. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you ! 🙂
Reducing the number of physical papers you have will definitely make the process of organizing them a lot easier.
I know there are apps, like Adobe Scan, that help you scan documents with your phone, but you get the same quality as if you did it with a scanner. Check them out 😉
