Why you should get sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts for your mom

Nowadays, most products aren’t built to last or produced with the planet and our health in mind.

What better way to show your love to your mother than by gifting her something better for her and the environment?

She will know you’ve made an effort to choose something more meaningful, and in general, of better quality.

That way, she’ll be able to use it for many years to come and know that the item won’t hurt her health and that it was made ethically and sustainably.

Not all the products in this article are organic (because of their nature), but many are and all of them are eco-friendly.

In this post, you'll find 18 sustainable and organic Mother's Day gifts your mom will love!

What are sustainable & organic Mother’s Day gifts?

Organic Mother’s Day gifts are made without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and other harmful chemicals.

It means they’re better for the soil and the environment, but also for our health and that of the people producing them.

Organic products are usually more sustainable than their non-organic counterparts.

However, not all sustainable products are organic.

Many are, but if they’re not, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not eco-friendly.

Sustainable Mother’s Day gifts are made with eco-friendly materials such as recycled plastic, organic cotton, linen, responsibly sourced wood, or other natural materials.

They do not contain any harmful chemicals and are safe to use.

These items are also built to last, and the brand selling them has implemented all kinds of sustainable practices.

For instance, it may have taken action to save energy and reduce waste.

It also prioritizes transparency and ethical manufacturing and may have received different third-party certifications.

18 sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts your mom will adore

1. High-quality bedding set

What better feeling than sinking into clean, high-quality bedding at night?

Gift your mom this simple joy of life by giving her a nice sheet or duvet cover set!

My favorite brand when it comes to buying bedding is Saatva.

This sustainable brand has a great variety of sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers made with eco-friendly fabrics such as GOTS and Fair Trade-certified organic cotton and linen.

There are several colors and weaves to choose from, and the company has implemented many sustainable practices throughout its supply chain.

2. Chocolate

One of the most popular gifts many of us choose to give our moms is chocolate.

Who doesn’t like chocolate?!

To make this gift more special, choose a brand that received some sustainable certifications.

For instance, Thrive Market sells delicious Fair Trade Certified and USDA organic chocolate truffles.

Make sure to also check out the brands Raaka and Taza because they both sell organic chocolate gift boxes.

These are perfect to give as presents for Mother’s Day, particularly if you’re on a budget!

3. Handbag

If your mom loves handbags, this might be a great gift idea for her.

Luckily, many brands are making them with quality and the environment in mind.

One of my favorites is Nisolo!

It offers elegant leather handbags that are all made to last.

From large totes to small crossbody bags, its pieces are both versatile and chic.

They’re crafted from leather sourced from tanneries that are certified by the Leather Working Group.

The brand is also a B Corp and Climate-Neutral company, so it meets some of the highest standards for environmental and social performance.

Able is another brand with gorgeous leather handbags.

But if you prefer to buy one made without animal-derived materials, have a look at Melie Bianco’s website.

This PETA-approved brand sells beautiful vegan handbags made with recycled or natural materials.

4. Jewelry

If you want to gift your mom a nice necklace or earrings that are sustainably made, definitely check out Ana Luisa

It offers many styles and designs, and the brand is Climate-Neutral certified and very transparent about its supply chain.

Whether you choose to buy a ring or a bracelet, almost all of its jewelry is made with recycled metals such as gold or silver.

It also uses lab-grown diamonds to avoid the disastrous environmental and social impacts of diamond mining.

5. Tableware

If your mom is a foodie and loves spending time in the kitchen, she would probably love to receive a handmade ceramic mug or a dinnerware set.

Non-toxic cookware brand Our Place has you covered with its collection of ceramics and handmade glassware made from recycled glass.

From plates to bowls to serveware, it has everything she may need to host and serve delicious meals.

MINNA is another brand that creates quality tableware.

Alongside its handmade ceramics and glasses, it offers handwoven textiles such as placemats, tablecloths, and runners.

These are very unique and will add texture and pattern to the dining table.

They’re even certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100, meaning that they’re 100% free of harmful chemicals!

6. Skincare gift set

One of the best sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts is skincare made with organic or natural ingredients.

Ask your mom what she uses regularly and see if you can get her what she needs from a clean, non-toxic brand.

I highly recommend the brand True Botanicals.

It prioritizes organic and wild-harvested ingredients and makes sure they are sourced sustainably.

All its products also carry the MADE SAFE seal, which certifies they are formulated without toxic chemicals.

I also absolutely love Herbivore’s products as well as the seaweed-infused skincare from OSEA.

All three of these brands sell lovely gift sets I’m sure your mom will love!

7. Slippers

If your mom likes wearing slippers at home, give her a comfy pair of slippers.

Parachute makes several pairs from Turkish cotton or wool.

They are all super cozy and feature a timeless, classic design.

The great thing about them is that, since they’re made from natural materials, they’re very breathable and soft!

The brand is also Climate-Neutral and prioritizes sustainability and durability when crafting its products.

You might also want to check out Nootkas, which is another brand creating wool slippers.

These are very warm and odor-resistant, and they’re handmade from responsibly sourced New Zealand wool.

They’re the coziest slippers you can get your mom!

8. Flowers

Flowers are a classic, yet meaningful present many of us give our mothers.

If you don’t know what to gift her, this might be your best bet!

However, did you know that cut flowers can be very unsustainable?

Imported flowers are flown thousands of miles in refrigerated airplanes, and those grown domestically are often produced in heated greenhouses.

So flowers can have a huge carbon footprint!

We also often grow them using pesticides and large quantities of water

Thankfully, we can find more sustainable flowers.

Try to buy bouquets sourced from local farmers and choose flowers that are in season.

Also, see if you can buy organic flowers or flowers that are certified by Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance.

If you can’t find sustainable flowers locally, consider buying them from Bouqs.

This online flower shop ships to all 50 states and partners with farmers who use sustainable growing practices and few toxic chemicals.

9. Throw blanket

Here again, one of the best sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts: an organic throw blanket.

Saatva has different options including several made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, and they all feel luxurious and soft.

The non-organic ones are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, so they’re completely non-toxic and healthy to use.

They’re ideal for moms who love being cozy and relaxing at home!

Parachute also has several OEKO-TEX-certified throw blankets, which feature different kinds of knits and fabrics.

One of them is made of organic cotton, but you can also get some crafted from alpaca wool or linen.

10. Perfume

Perfume is one of the most gifted presents on Mother’s Day.

But did you know that most perfumes are made with toxic chemicals that are harmful to human health?

Luckily, you can still find some that not only smell amazing but are also formulated with non-toxic, natural ingredients.

The brand Abbott offers non-toxic unisex scents that are inspired by nature and contain clean, sustainable ingredients.

From sequoia to papaya to grapefruit, its scents are all vegan and cruelty-free.

Plus, the company donates a portion of all sales revenue to conservation efforts.

I also love the brand Vyrao!

Its fragrances are formulated by a master perfumer using sustainably sourced natural fragrance oil and organic plant and flower essences.

The base of its perfumes is 100% organic sugarcane alcohol grown without pesticides and fertilizers.

11. Pajamas

One of my favorite sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts is a cozy pajama set made of organic cotton.

Pact has many options to choose from, including pieces featuring feminine floral prints.

The brand makes them in a Fair Trade factory and is carbon neutral and certified by GOTS.

Another great brand worth checking out is Hanna Andersson.

Its adult pajama sets have gorgeous patterns such as stripes, lemons, flowers, bunnies, and more.

They’re made from sustainable fabrics like organic cotton or Tencel, and they’re certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 so they’re 100% free of hazardous substances.

If your mom loves wearing makeup, you cannot go wrong by gifting her a product she uses regularly.

You might also want to gift her a nice, non-toxic makeup set such as those sold by Ilia Beauty.

The brand’s skincare-powered makeup contains natural and organic ingredients, active botanicals, and safe synthetics.

It’s free of harmful chemicals and the brand is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny and a member of 1% For The Planet!

Alleyloop is another great clean beauty brand selling a variety of non-toxic makeup sets.

Plus, this company is B Corp certified and removes ocean-bound plastic waste with every purchase!

13. Ceramic cookware

Another awesome gift for moms who love cooking is ceramic cookware.

The two best brands you should check out for that are Our Place and Caraway

Whether you choose to buy a pan, a pot, or a complete cookware set, all their pieces feature a non-stick ceramic coating that is completely free of toxins such as PFAS and heavy metals.

Not only that, but their cookware is also very aesthetically pleasing and will elevate your mom’s cooking experience!

14. Baskets

Baskets always come in handy to organize things around the house, and they can be decor pieces by themselves.

If you want to get some gorgeous ones for your mom, make sure to have a look at those sold by Parachute.

They are sold in different sizes and feature a subtle texture and clean lines to ensure they fit with any aesthetic.

These baskets are hand-braided from 100% palm leaf fibers by Mexican artisans who have been using techniques passed down for generations.

If you want more options, you’ll love those offered by The Citizenry!

There are many styles, shapes, and sizes to choose from, and most of them feature practical handles so we can carry them easily.

Very durable, they’re hand-woven from elephant grass, palm leaves, or totora reed.

15. Non-toxic candles

If you want to gift your mom some candles this Mother’s Day, make sure to pick non-toxic ones.

Those made with paraffin wax are incredibly toxic to use in addition to being unsustainable.

Instead, opt for candles made with coconut wax, beeswax, or soy wax, and featuring a lead-free cotton wick.

My all-time favorite sustainable candle brand is Siblings.

Its wax is an eco-friendly blend of coconut, soy, and apricot oil, and each candle is formulated with a mix of non-toxic fragrances and ethically sourced essential oils.

Siblings’ candles are also free of phthalates, parabens, sulfates, and more.

The company offers candle refills so you can keep reusing your vessels and candle jars forever.

Plus, it uses 100% compostable packaging and offsets its entire carbon footprint!

16. E-reader

A great gift for bookworms and moms who read regularly is a Kindle.

It will allow your mom to have thousands of books on one device instead of storing tons of them in her home.

Not to mention Kindle books are almost always cheaper than paperback versions, so she’ll save money and save trees at the same time!

Kindles are designed to read like real paper, even in bright sunlight, and they’re easy on the eyes.

This one even built to withstand accidental immersion in water!

17. Soap

One of the best sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts is a set of Dr. Bronner’s multi-purpose liquid soap.

Very versatile, this product can be used all around the house from laundry to dishwashing to all-purpose cleaning.

It will change your mom’s cleaning game!

It is made with organic oils and certified Fair Trade ingredients and is packaged in a 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottle.

If you prefer to gift her soap bars, I highly recommend those sold by Ethique.

The brand has a large selection of soap bars we can use for our body, face, or hair.

Everything is cruelty-free and made with clean, natural ingredients.

The bars are also boxed up in a plastic-free, home-compostable, recyclable packaging.

Plus, Ethique plants a tree for every purchase and is a “Best For The World” B Corp!

Herbivore is another brand selling non-toxic soap bars.

It offers two cleansing soaps made with bamboo charcoal or pink clay.

18. Experiences

This Mother’s Day, remember that you can also avoid buying physical products and opt for an immaterial gift.

This is particularly a great idea if your mom already has everything she needs and you don’t know what present to choose.

Consider inviting her to the restaurant or the theater.

If you have a bigger budget, you may also want to take her on a trip to a nearby location.

(Make sure to read about my best eco-friendly travel tips to make it more sustainable!)

Also, think about what your mom has always dreamed of doing or trying.

Has she always wanted to go wine tasting but never got around to trying it?

Give her this experience!

Final thoughts on sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts

I hope this list of 18 sustainable and organic Mother’s Day gifts was helpful and that you could find a present your mom will love!

Before buying anything, make sure to ask yourself whether your mom will actually use and enjoy the present.

Because no matter how sustainable the gift is, if it’s not used and loved, it’s not an eco-friendly option.

Plus, I’m sure you want your mom to be happy about it.
